FMS April Newsletter

FMS April Newsletter 2008

The long winter has finally loosened its grip and the warmer weather is very welcomed. Hopefully everyone had a relaxing Spring Break and has returned re-energized for the fourth quarter. As the weather warms up, so will the opportunities and activities for FMS students to excel.

During April, eighth grade students will complete alternative reading, math, and science assessments developed by our teachers. These assessments focus on key concepts we believe are important to students as learners. These tests are significant because they give us additional information of a student’s progress and provide an indication of how professional development strategies are impacting student achievement. These assessments will be administered throughout the month. We will be administering our third round of the BRI (Basic Reading Inventory) to all students on April 17th and 18th. Please encourage your sons and daughters to do their best work.

Kicking off the month, musically speaking, on April 8th, our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Jazz Bands will take center stage for a 7:00 PM concert. On April 12th, 35 FMS Band students who have been selected to participate in the Mt. Pleasant Honor Band will have a busy day of music. The all day event will be full of advanced lessons, followed by an afternoon concert by many students from other area schools. Our vocal music department will also have a select group of 7th and 8th grade chorus students participating at the Chorus Festival in Washington on April 14th.

The Middle School Art Show will be the weekend of April 12th and 13th from 1-4 pm on each day. All FMS students who have taken art class will have a piece of artwork in the show. An invitation to the show will be coming to all parents in the near future.

On April 14th and 22nd, FMS 6th grade teachers, counselors, and administrators will hold the annual 6th Grade Orientation for our incoming 5th grade students. Qualifying students who used their assignment journals properly during the third quarter will be rewarded with a pop and pizza party during the week of April 21st. On April 24th, interested 7th and 8th grade girls will accompany Mrs. Messerli and Mrs. Steward to a career conference in Ames.

The annual FMS “Buy One, Get One Free” Scholastic Book fair will be held April 21-25th. Students can buy one book and get the second book (valued at the same or lower price) free! All students will have the opportunity to visit the book fair during their reading classes. The book fair will be open each morning at 8:10 and will close each afternoon at 4pm. If parents would like to volunteer at the book fair, please contact Mrs. Lantz.

And finally, don’t forget we kick off our 7th and 8th Girls and Boys Track season in April, so come on out and support our track athletes.

Have a great April !! Gary Henry, Monte Hill
