Student Council means Students Caring!
by Sue McCracken
Lincoln student council, led by teachers Taryn Ryan and Sue Carr, has been challenging students to make a difference in their world. The biggest project has been purchasing beehives for countries where healthy foods are often limited. Students were asked to seek employment at home (folding laundry, cleaning the house, etc) in order to earn a dollar which they returned to school with a slip of paper stating how they earned the money. When a bee hive (paper variety) was full of 30 student stickers it signified enough money to purchase a hive. Between students dollars and cookie sales, by the end of the year three hives will have been purchased. Cookies for the cookie sale were donated by parents and over $60 was raised to help with the bee hives and purchase books for the student council book store. Way to go, Lincoln students!
Another council project has been the collection of food items and paper products for the Lord's Cupboard. Each month a different color packaging has been encouraged (although no item has ever been rejected for being the wrong color!) Students enjoyed the hall decorations in the monthly color and donated many dollars worth of products for families needing emergency food supplies.
Another fun (and learning!) project has been the opening of the student council book store. Each month students are allowed to purchase a new book for the low price of one dollar. Lincoln students are the proud owners of over 150 new books through this effort. The book store was initially funded with a donation from Lincoln Links, the parent group. We hope this will become a regular event at Lincoln.
And last, but not least, student council has sponsored some fun days where students are allowed to wear hats, pajamas, clothes for Earth Day, etc. Student council members include fifth graders Ashley, Sarah, and Nyle; fourth graders Natalie, Katie, and Brittany, and third graders Kelly, Denver, and Josh.
