Cooking Up Fractions in 7th Grade Math

by Jill Thomas & Kelly Schloss

Seventh grade mathematics students are currently finishing a unit about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. To show what they know, they worked in stations during the last two days. Great work seventh graders!

Recipe Conversion/Cooking Station:
At this station each student adjusted a recipe to serve the correct number of individuals in his/her group. Based on the recipe students had to either multiply using fractions or divide using fractions. Students got to choose from two recipes, Puppy Chow or Rice Krispies Treats.

Music and Fractions Station:
At this station students practiced adding fractions with the use of music notes. Students were able to create their own measure of music that met the required guidelines. For example students had to create a measure that had four beats.

Fraction Checkers Station:
At this station students were able to play checkers with a twist. To move your checker piece you had to add the fractions from the game board. To jump a checker you had to subtract the smaller fraction from the larger fraction.

 Flash Card Creation Station:
At this station students were given the task of being a tutor. They had to make 12 flashcards meeting specific criteria.

Poster Station:
At this station students made a poster that showed specific steps/examples of how to add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions. Students were also encouraged to relate fractions to daily activities.
