Going Google Pilot Project

Fairfield High School and Middle School are both starting a new pilot project this second semester called Going Google. This pilot project will give teachers and students full access to the Educational Edition of Google Apps.  The google apps that may be used for this project are:

  • Google Mail
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Documents
  • Google Sites
  • Google Video


Why are we piloting Google Apps?  
1.  Google Apps Education Edition is free to K-12 schools.  This could be a potential cost savings to the district.

2.  Teachers and students are attempting to use current technologies in the classroom but are often hindered because these technologies require an e-mail account during the "sign up" process.   Google Mail will allow all students to have a district-provided e-mail to utilize for such projects.  The e-mail accounts will be managed by the district.

3.  Google Apps provides tools that can increase communication and collaboration between students, teachers, and administrators.

Who will be participating in this pilot project?
Participation will be voluntary.  Teachers will be given the opportunity to utilize Google Apps with their students.  We anticipate that nearly all students will be exposed to aspects of this pilot project.

Acceptable Use Policy
The district is currently working on updating the student acceptable use policy for internet and related technologies.  In the meantime, we'll utilize student conduct guidelines found in the student handbook.  
Students will have access to their e-mail accounts outside of school.  It will be up to each household to establish guidelines for such use at home.  However, student conduct guidelines apply to all Google Apps whether the student is using them at school or at home.

21st Century Skills
This pilot project may very well lead the way for our district.  Google Apps has the potential to really immerse our students in essential 21st century skills; communication and collaboration.  In addition, other current technologies are available as a result of student mail accounts.
