HUMAN PROPERTIES: A Night of Inanimate Characters

What if inanimate objects could think, move, and speak? What if they had emotions, opinions, and relationships, as humans do? These questions are pondered in the FHS fall show entitled, Human Properties. Don’t miss this unique presentation! Showtimes are Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19 at 7:30 PM in the Edgeton/Mitcheltree/Slechta Auditorium at Fairfield High School. Tickets are $5 at the door or free with FCSD Activity Pass. There is general seating and the house will open to the public at 7:00 PM.
Human Properties is composed of two different scripts, both with inanimate objects as characters. Emotional Baggage by Nina Shengold is the stand alone story of unclaimed luggage at Newark Airport, while Animated Conversations by Alan Haehnel features 28 separate, mini scenes with 2-3 characters each. FHS Drama Director, Noel Wotherspoon, was intrigued by the possibilities and challenges presented by these scripts. How does an actor go about portraying a stick of deodorant, a flashlight, a piece of jewelry, a garden hose, a suitcase, a laptop, or a sock? What stories do these objects have to tell? What truth is there to be discovered about how we as humans interact with these things daily?
Adding another layer of fun, the objects will not be named in the program for each scene. Instead a word bank will be provided and the audience must use subtle costume choices, word play, and other context clues to figure out who’s what in each scene. Human Properties will be entertaining for the whole family!
The actors all play multiple characters, some human and some objects. Cast members include: Laney Bowers, Niko Emerson, Tristen Garretson, Jay Hames, Ella Holderbaum, Evan Hunger, Nicole Hunger, Manon Kermott, Phoenix Johnson, Madalyn Smithburg, Daisy Trent, Marleigh Waugh, and Miracle Weathers. Student crew includes: Esther-Rose Anderson, Madi Cox, Bidhi Dangol, Ronan Daniels, Valerie Hernandez, Lola Kensel, Rorey Krause, Stormy Lint, Meara Malloy, Charlie Mckerley, Kam Mellot, Arissa Pohren, Trinity Rowland, Toby Sutherland, and Pearl Winheim.
Adult Crew Includes: Ms. Noel Wotherspoon, Director; Mr. Meshari Alnouri, Lighting and Technical Director; Mrs. Betsie Wotherspoon, Costume Mistress.
